I want to know if this manoevre below is illegal. I witness at least 20 vehicles doing it in the mornings and it really rattles my cage that the rest of us queue obediently.
Answer:
The road markings will determine the direction of movement as well as the channelizing lines. A vehicle is not allowed to go in a direction other than that indicated by a yellow arrow and may not cross the solid white line between two lanes.
The sketch you provided does not show the road markings but normally the first line on the left will be a left turn lane only and the one to the right of the of that a continue straight on lane only.
The same would apply for the right turning vehicles from the opposite side. The red vehicles would commit two offences – failing to comply with the yellow arrow marking and crossing the solid channelizing line.
The problem is enforcement. Offenders are seldom prosecuted for these offences.
